400 Series Model Descriptions

Model 404

Slant shank, gear driven, internal motor, internal light, straight stitch with reverse, bed is 16.5" wide x 7" deep. Flip-up bobbin winder on vertical portion of the arm of the machine just under the handwheel. Has drop in class 66 bobbin in front of needle position accessible by a slide plate. Threads front to back. Thread cutter built into back of presser bar. Has rounded throat plate which raises instead of having feed dogs which lower. Tan and cream in color. The top and handwheel on the machine is cream while the rest is tan.


Model 403

Slant shank, gear driven, internal motor, internal light, zigzag with cams, reverse, bed is 16.5" wide x 7" deep. Flip-up bobbin winder on vertical portion of the arm of the machine just under the handwheel. Has drop in class 66 bobbin in front of needle position accessible by a slide plate. Threads front to back. Thread cutter built into back of presser bar. Machine has flip up door on top of arm that allows access of different cams for various stitches. Two spool pins on the flip-up door. Must have replaceable cam to do any zigzag stitching. Has rounded throat plate which raises instead of having feed dogs which lower. Machine uses either a straight stitch throat plate or a zigzag throat plate depending upon the stitching being done. Tan and cream in color. The top and handwheel on the machine is cream while the rest is tan.


Model 401

Slant shank, gear driven, internal motor, internal light, zigzag with cams and built in stitches, reverse, bed is 16.5" wide x 7" deep. Flip-up bobbin winder on vertical portion of the arm of the machine just under the handwheel. Has drop in class 66 bobbin in front of needle position accessible by a slide plate. Threads front to back. Thread cutter built into back of presser bar. Machine has flip up door on top of arm that allows access of different cams for various stitches. Two spool pins on the flip-up door. Several stitches built in but is expandable through the use of additional cams. Stitches are selected via a large knob on the front of the machine above the light. Stitch width controlled by a sliding lever to the right of the stitch selector. Has rounded throat plate which raises instead of having feed dogs which lower. Machine uses either a straight stitch throat plate or a zigzag throat plate depending upon the stitching being done. Tan and cream in color. The top and handwheel on the machine is cream while the rest is tan.

Some models have the bobbin winder on the top of the machine to the right side near the hand wheel. Some early models had holes cut in the bed for use as a treadle machine.


Model 411

Similar to 401, the Model 411 has chainstich capability.


Model 431

431.jpg (11499 bytes)Free arm version of Model 411. Has later throat plate like the Singer Touch n' Sew series. Detachable portion of bed contains a flip up bed extension similar to that found on a Model 222 (Featherweight).
